He went and picked one out and then we went together. He didn't tell me he had already picked one out, he just wanted to see if I would pick the same one and I did!! He was so sweet and romantic!! That has been 33 yrs. ago.

We went together and then I went and got the one we had both seemed to keep going back to. As the guy in this relationship I was very happy to get approval of some kind. She didn't pick one and say that is the one and she didn't know I had even bought it. I do think that it should be a joint effort to a point, so that both of you will be happy with the choice . But remember , it's what the two of you want, no one else . Talk it over . Just because you talk about it doesn't mean it has to happen today. Good Luck

We skipped the engagement ring and used the cash on a kick *** honeymoon with wonderful memories. Jewelry loses it's value the second you purchase it...it is not an investment, nor will it feed you or keep you warm at night...just my humble opinion....oh and diamond engagement rings have only been a custom since the 50's when DeBeers (diamond manufacturer) decided to convince young ladies it was a symbol of love....

He asked me what stones I liked (opals) and what settings I liked and we had a look at some together so I could point out what sort of thing I liked the best. He then picked out the ring he gave me, and he made an awesome choice, I got an eternity style setting with fire opals, he could not have chosen better.

That's a hard one. Most of the time, the guy wants to surpise you with the ring. The difficulty comes when they don't know what you like. I would leave subtle (maybe not so subtle) hints around like pictures printed off the internet, a few well placed words related to diamond cut, band material, ring size, stuff like that. See how well he does.

Well I haven't been married yet but I think that there is a chance for both, he can suprise you at a store and let you pick the ring or he picks the ring and suprises you somewhere else.

We had gone together to look at a ring so he'd have an idea what to get me...but I ended up leaving with the ring that day!

He did and it was soooooo ugly and ended up being fake! After we broke up, I tried to pawn it and the highest price I got for it was $20! What a cheapo. Needless to say, I'm glad I didn't marry THAT guy. I think that constructive hinting works really well. Talking about rings and what you like is a good idea.
