It has got to be the green olives they put into it ! If you put a cocktail onion into the same drink, it would be called a Gibson.
Yes traditional martini is gin ! Vodka is a spin off. Both spirits are used for many other drinks, but I can't really think of any other drink that is garnished with green olives.
Nowadays, anything chilled by shaking or stiring over ice and strained into a martini glass can be "called" a martini.

well, martini has many different mixing methods.
You can mix it with Gin or Vodka...I think James Bond movies made this cocktail very popular. There is a group of cocktails that is called ''tini''...and martini is the basic ingredient for this group of cocktails. Why we put green olive into the cocktail? The answer is ; because the martini based cocktails are very dry.So an olive is best to add some moist to the cocktail. Also we use a slice of lemon to add some acid, simply squeeze the lemon peel on to the cocktail.
For the glass;the glass that martini is served in is called a martini glass. That means a type of glass is named after a brand.Easy to prepare and I think high society and Bond Movies made this cocktail popular.

Traditionally a martini is gin and vermouth....vermouth was added because gin was considered a low grade liquor. It is only recently that top shelf gins like Tanqueray have given gin respectability.
The vast majority of people now drink vodka martinis.....and usually with no vermouth (called drinking it extra dry). Generally people will drink vodka martinis with olives, while gin gets a twist. Adding olive juice to the martini is called making it dirty.
People usually order martinis because the liquor portion is larger then just ordering a vodka up.
In current bar culture a Martini is defined by the glass the drink is served in. Many, MANY drink concoctions with various liquors can be found in the martini section of most restaurant drink menus. Examples would include Cosmopolitans....which are served in a martini glass and hence listed on most restaurants martini's section. Another example would be the various forms of chocolate or apple martinis.

A true martini is made with good vodka and nothing else. If it is a cheap vodka, you use vermouth to cut the harshness.
