The place you are describing exists!

It's called Fat City (owned by a guy named Tom Fat). It's near the airport, off of Kettner, I believe. You've probabaly seen it a hundred times on your way to the airport- it's got a neon pinkish, art-deco exterior. Great Steaks, Great Value.
The only negative is a nothing-to-write-home-about wine selection.

This is an EXPERT recommendation.

(someone said Kelly's and Albie's and they're fine, but try Fat City)

This is a fun place with some very impressive selections of beef. The biggest steak is beyond belief. By the way, don't wear a tie, because they will cut it off and hang it from the rafters. As a gag, wear a tie you don't care about to startle your date/guests.

I would hardly consider Stuart Andersons a steak place! If you want good steak, try Albie's located in the travel lodge in hotel circle (I know that sounds weird but its excellent) Everyone whom I have brought there has gone back, I wouldn't call it cheap, but its reasonable. If you want something more mainstream, Outback is always awesome.

Only one place is coming to mind and that is Cafe LaMaze in National City (on Highland Ave). I'm not sure if it's considered inexpensive, I think it's comparable in price to Stuart Andersons. They make a really great prime rib and their seafood is pretty good, too.

We tried Kelly's the last time that we were there and we were pleased with their steak, service, seafood, drinks, and they have a piano player, and a full ball, then later they have karaoke. The bread, desserts, and the price was also good for what you got.
