Honestly. Because back in the day, ALL sailors were men and sleeping inside a giant falick shapped ship plus calling it a dude was and is considered Gay.
That's why. Sailors love and trust their lives to the ships that they spent their blood and sweat maintaining and operating. It is much more comforting to call a ship Betsy, then Tom or something.
You can't understand. It's a guy thing..

It's a tradition created by men to proclaim all things that are near and dear to us.
It's a way to give an object a persona. What better way to express a depth of devotion than to say she ( I love my boat and will defend her with my life).
It's a guy thing.

yes all naval craft are refered to in the female gender because that is all a sailor dreams of so they call the ships her or she. sometimes they even call them a rusty ***** when they get extended on a cruise.
