I will be babysitting a 3yo and a 16 month old. Does anyone have any suggestions of things to do to entertain them, what to watch for, or any other helpful hints? Thanks!!

Keep them occupied and they shouldn't give you any trouble.

For the 3 yr. old, bring a bag of crayons, markers, stickers, etc. and let them create a picture to put on the refrigerator. Or, get some pillows and blankets and make a "fort" or a "castle" (depending on if the 3 yr. old is a boy or a girl!) and play in it with them.

For the 16 month old, just play with them. Get out some of their toys and play. 16 month olds don't have a very long attention span so trying to get him/her involved in an activity or game would be pointless. Just get out the toys and play with them :-)

Try to keep the two of them in one room like the living room. That way, they aren't running around the house and getting into things. Also, if you're going to be watching them around the time of lunch or dinner try to make sure you don't give them any foods that are "chokers" (as we call them). Things like hot dogs, popcorn, peanut butter, and hard candies are "chokers" because they are the most choked on items among toddlers.

For the three year old you can color with the child, this is a very "play pretend" age for kids and they like to do things like play restaurant. Depending on the time of day, during the day you can take both kids out into the yard to play but you must keep an eye on BOTH of them at all times. If it is in the evening you will probably be enlisted to help them get ready for bed, reading bedtime stories, making sure the 3 year old brushes teeth. If it is a night time thing make sure you ask the parents about their bedtime habits. About if the child gets up what to do? etc. and relax. little kids are fun.

Diligence. Don't hang on the phone, have friend over or zone out on TV. A three year old can be in a world war as soon as you turn your back. Kids like attention. It helps to read to them or play soft music prior to bedtime so they can wind down. If baths are on your shift, be extra careful with the youngest one. Let them entertain you. Their parents have trust in your ability or they wouldn't have hired you.
