Ok, I will preach these tips to everyone I ever meet:
1). Do not just walk into a Tattoo parlor without knowing what it is you want.
2). Do not buy tattoos on impulse.
3). Shop for an artist. Look around ask friends.
4). When you shop for your artist ask to see his/her photo books.
5). Look at the art of the tattoos. smudge line here smudge line there...keep moving.
6). Keep your eyes open for tattoo ideas. Anything that looks "neat, cool, spiffy, etc etc."
7). Never get someones name. The only exception to this rule is children or the deceased.
8). Don't slap a butterfly you found in a beetle bailey cartoon on your arm. Customize, customize, customize. I cannot pound this into your heads hard enough. Change colors sizes or different parts, add background... ASK THE TATTOO ARTISTS OPINION.
9). Don't argue with the Artist try and see what he is seeing, but at the same time try and make him see what you see.
10). Unless you are currently in prison or are going to prison don't get a Tattoo of scooby-doo hitting shaggy from behind. Future husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, children, employers, will not find this funny.
11). Placing, the easiest way I have found to do that is to take the photograph or pencil sketch of your tattoo and move it around on your body and find the spots that make you the most comfortable.
12). When you make your mind up on what tattoo, what artist, what placing, do not go inebriated, stoned, tripping, coked up, or just all around f^cked up. You probably wont come out with what you wanted and everyone you know will call you a p^ssy behind your back.
I would have added more but I ran out of steam.:(

I think that if you haven't figured this out yourself then there is no way you should be getting a tattoo. A tattoo is on you for life. If you dont know what you want yourself, do some research. Do you have any animals you love, what about flowers etc. Pick something you have an attachment too and then research some ideas on the net. Here are a couple of good websites that I use for ideas. Please though do not get something someone else has recommended. Getting something on your body permanently is your decision and should be what you want there for the rest of your life.

If you don't know what you want, don't get one just to get one.
Every tattoo I have is a symbol of something that is important in my life. I will be able to look back when I'm 80 years old and explain to my grandkids the significance of every tattoo. My body is like a scrapbook.
Too many people just up and get something that looks cool or seems to fit them at that particular moment in time. They end up hating it later. Don't just go on a whim. Only you know yourself well enough to know what you're going to want on your body for the rest of your life. What is important to you? What do you want to see on your body, looking like an inky blob in 50 years while you explain it - with FONDNESS - to your grandkids? Keep that stuff in mind when choosing. Tattoos should never be a mistake or fashion statement. They should be an artistic expression of who you are, as a person.

If you have no idea what you want then do not go get a tattoo. This is a decision that will be with you for the rest of your life... going in with no ideas except what you might get from total strangers who know nothing about you except that you are almost 18 is not a good idea.... wait until you know what you want

If you go talk with a local tattoo artist he/she will be able to give you all kinds of awesome ideas. He/she will also be able to draw up a lot of ideas and can even put the stencil on your back to see if you like it. A good artist will work with you until you're happy with the result.

ok i'd give you some ideas but i think you should !know! what you want before you get one.. i think tattoos are meant to be something that reminds a person of something.. not just any random thing that someone on yahoo answers tells you to put on your body.. good luck finding something you like and will appreciate and respect in the future.

get something meaningful that you won't regret it 10, 20, 30 years. and put it somewhere where you can easily conceal it, if you ever plan on getting a professional job where visible tattoos would be frowned on.
