The US did this in WWII for small time offenders. The judges gave them a choice, jail or join the militay. Sounds like a great idea.

Why a thumbs down, its true.

It sounds good at first glance but it is a potential recipe for disaster.

Our armed forces are put through extensive training and they learn how to protect themselves and each other. When they are in Iraq, Afghanistan or other hostile locations, they need to rely on each other to be there for each other and do their jobs to the best of their ability. They need to know that their buddy's are going to do everything possible to protect them. Most of them are in the military because they choose to serve our country.

If you take untrained prisoners, you are basically placing them there for target practice. If you take the time to train them and send them to hostile locations, they might look for opportunities to escape. Not only does our military lack the time to babysit the prisoners to make sure that they are committed to the cause, our fighting men and women need to have the confidence that these prisoners will not run and hide or do anything to place them in any danger.

There are also a couple of other things to think about - do we really want to give prisoners military grade weapons which can be used against us if they so choose? How do we determine which crimes warrant a prisoner to be deployed to Iraq? What happens if the deployed prisoner is actually one of the estimated 25% behind bars who really did not commit the alleged crime?

I like the idea in principle but it would never work.

Hmm. Let's think. Should you let crack head joe and serial killers have guns. You better make sure that the prisoners are the whole frontline cuz there would be explosions shootings and all that others stuff in the first 10 seconds, but in other words the prisoners who lived should be placed in jail with less time (if they didn't kill any other "U.N. soldiers"

I am a soldier. There is enough of a problem with soldiers's loyalty to other soldier as it is. We don't need any worse immoral criminals in our military defending my a** thank you but no thanks!!
Life of leisure? Have you been in a prison? I worked in one. Sure prisoners have better health care than many, many citizens. But you can thank "criminal ""rights"" for that. Aslo thank jailers that abused their authirity while you are at it.
TV helps keep risoners busy because jailers are always undermanned and overage, obese, undertrained, undermotivated, take your pick, many of the aforementioned apply. Why? Because life sucks for people who work there too.

I know, I've seen it. Want to save tax dollors? Make American soldiers actually learn responsibility to clean up after themselves. Most Officers in the Army have their clean up done by junior enlisted soldiers. Because American people don't like dirtying ther hands. Overseas, they hire Third Country nationals to do the job.
Also the majority of people who are highly efficient in their job DO NOT work in the Military. Why? Because they can make more money outside. Want to save tax dollors, raise a society that will work for little money and sacrifice their lively hood for others. That wont happen in American society! (at least on a large enough scale to matter)
Because working in the military you give up more rights than you ever know you had. The Army has a way of strong arming people who are not aware of the rules. I've seen this first hand. I really hate to say this, but what Kerry said has a ring of truth. However, it in no way is completely accurate. And I really dislike that guy.

I apologize for my tirade.

But I don't watn a criminal to serve alongside me. You are either naive about military life or do not care about the wellfare of people who risk their lives, and risk the happiness of their families, to defend you!

surely no longer. defense force provider is an honorable undertaking. it is likewise starting to be to be further and further a occupation that takes substantial training. the USA of a has particularly some people who're volunteering to place their lives on the line and particular does not % a team of thugs working around with weapons and ammo.

Great question. I believe they should be given an option but not forced to. I feel the leadership should be from within the prisoners, and their missions very specific and simple.
Unfortunately, it would violate their rights, so it will never happen.

Sure, send an unreliable bunch that's been cast out by society and never known allegiance to anyone but themselves and give them guns.

Brilliant. That should curtail the crime in Iraq and stop the abuse of Iraqi citizens by members of the US forces.

Life of leisure... go ahead, commit a crime and go to prison and let me know all about your life of leisure.

Prisoners can't be trusted. The second you put a gun in their hand they'll turn it on their commanding officers or join the enemy factions. The last thing I would do to a murderer is put a gun in his hand.

I've always thought that we should use prisoners as stunt doubles in movies. Why fake someone's head getting blown off when you can take someone on death row and get the real thing, Eh?

I think the Bush kids and the children of every member of congress who vote in favor of the slaughter of other humans should be in the front line before a single working class son or daughter puts on a uniform.
