ok now i read the manual i i am wondering two things what is macro
and is there a way to keep the shutter open for as long as you want.Help would be greatly appreciated

Macro is for getting in real close with your camera lens to take photographs of flowers, insects or small objects etc. It's the 'flower' button on the back of the camera.
And your camera has a maximum shutter of 30 seconds...which you can only use by selecting 'Shutter Priority' (S) or 'Manual' (M) on the Mode dial.
By using M...you can select the shutter speed AND the aperture.
