There are 2 different illnesses with similar names. Bartonella can be transmitted to humans. Some cats are carriers and don't have any symptoms, other cats can get swollen lymph nodes, fevers, or muscular pain. You should always have your cat seen by a vet if you think it may be sick. There is also a hemobartenella infection which can be deadly to cats because it attacks the red blood cells and makes the cat anemic. It is not contagious to humans but is DEADLY to cats if not treated. Both are transmitted by fleas or mosquitos.

If you're talking about hemobartonella,if it's not treated ,it can cause death from severe anemia.I was feeding a stray cat and one day he wouldn't eat,so I looked at his gums and they were white.I immediately thought leukemia and rushed him to the vet,but the test for FIV and FELV were both negative.Further bloodwork showed that he had hemobartonella, and 21 days of doxycycline and TLC had him back to normal in no time.It is spread by bites, though,so if your cat isn't neutered, you need to have it done when he is better, and keep him in the house to prevent reinfection.Jack was neutered about a month after his illness and is now one of my cats,no longer a stray.Hemobartonella is spread by ticks and fleas, and humans CANNOT catch it.

Usually these cats are VERY anemic, and sometimes very yellow.
