Don't join. Every job from office clerk to mechanic can be sent to where the combat is. Just because you aren't in an infantry unit doesn't mean the terrorists won't be trying to kill you. Wearing the uniform isn't about looking good; it's about defending a way of life. Don't feel bad if this is not for you. There are other ways to be patriotic without fighting. Just being a good citizen and not breaking the law shows that you want something better for your country.

To serve your country, but yet limit the chances of direct contact with the enemy, the choices would be the Navy or Air Force. Although there are thousands of deployed sailors and airmen in harm's way, they are not being shot at (combat) in the same manner as the Marines and Army. Lots of exceptions and lots of dead USAF/USN heroes...

Discuss this matter with a recruiter, who is in the best position to give military career advice.

Don't join the Army. No matter what area you go in there is a chance you will in battle. Supply lines are attacked, motor pools at bases etc...

Better off in Navy or Air force where they have a more of a long distance battle strategy.

Trust me if you go in the Army you should expect to go to Iraq. Not everyone goes, but there is a huge chance. If you don't want to be in direct battle I would recommend the Navy or Air Force.

If you want to be in the Army or any other branch of the military, expect at some time to be deployed. If you don't want to serve your country in that way, then find another job.

Try Commander and Chief. The President of the United States is technically considered part of the military since he is the ultimate head of the organization. Yet he never gets put in harms way.

Of course if we are being serious get involved in something that requires a great deal of technical know how. Usually these people are spared from combat situations. Occupations that fit this description are computer and networking professionals, engineers, and people who provide logistical support for the military.

If your a coward you should wait till this Iraq thing is over.
They need fighting men now and whatever you sign up for doesn't matter. Once they own you they send you where they need you.

find a civilian job. most soldiers at one time or another will be involved in some part of the war on terrorism, directly or indirectly. no one wants to go, but its part of the job.
