Very high, borderline personality disorders are characterized by chornic affective instability (mood swings similar to those or bipolar disorder but are usually reactive to situational stressors), and also usually have very poor ineffective indiviual coping mechanisms that lead them to self destructive/mutilation or suicidal behavior. But there is hope, recent studies have shown that a mild dose of a mood stabalizer (depakote or lithium) along with a mild anitdepressant have had great results.

By a breakdown, are you suggesting a psychotic episode? If so, yes, if the stress is combined with either lack of sleep, and/or depression. Assuming this person is someone you know, I highly recommend getting this person to seek treatment before psychosis begins. Once psychosis begins, the person will loose their perception of reality, become delusional, and in extreme cases become a threat of harm to others, or themselves. Medical treatment is advised.
