just let it soak. try to keep the water hot and it may take a couple of days but it will eventually come off. then just use a plastic scrapper or a scrub brush to finish the job. you could try using baking soda for a little extra scrubbing power.
DON"T put oil, bleach or soap on it as stones absorb that stuff and you may wreck it!!!
good luck.

Nancy what ever you do don't throw it out! I think that my stone ware cookware is the best investment I've ever made and I have a LOT of high priced cookware. I'm assuming that yours is unglazed. If you just cant stand the look of the burnt area put it and any other pieces you want to CLEAN in your oven and set it to self clean and leave them in until the cycle is over. They will come out with a little white ash that you can brush off and will be like new. Now don't burn anything in them again and just except the "coloring" that they take on from repeated use as a badge of Honor that shows that they have been used to prepare good food for you and yours.

Glazed or unglazed?
If glazed (shiny) soak in hot soapy water and scrub or use a paste of BonAmi and water
Unglazed (like Pampered Chef and the sort) soak over night in hot water and scrub. the hotter the water the more the pores open and let go of the food. You can also use a paste of baking soda and water and scrub with a lemon. DO NOT use soap or bleach or any thing like that!
After they are cleaned either type should cook fine again.

Stoneware is great for cooking, but tough to clean at times. You shouldn't use any chemicals on it except soap. And if you use soap, you must rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse. And then rinse some more! Stoneware will absorb anything that is put onto it.
My best advice is to just throw it out and get a new one.

Best advice I can give
Let it soak, soak, and soak some more.
You may even try soaking it in bleach if you're not concerned about the color.
Then take a scouring pad to it.

Soak in veggie. oil for 2 hours, and then take a plastic brush to it. It probably won't ever cook the sme, though. you'll have to oil it every time you cook with it now.
