Hi!
I'm thinking about starting a non-profit organization in the Appalachian part of Kentucky to help those with inadequate homes, without food, clothes, or personal items. Say if a family didn't have heat in their home, we would install some form of heating. What should I call my organization? And how could I raise money to do this?

I was thinking about the name "Appalachian Care Project".

That sounds like a great choice for a name for the organization. You can get donations by making your idea and needs public, also by writing grants from the state. You can also look into organizations such as the United Way which covers agencies as this and they may be helpful as far as resources for donations. Good luck and God bless

I think that maybe some people would be insulted at the thought of being a "Project". Maybe something like "Appalachian Assistance League". This type of wording would help these folks keep a bit of dignity.

To garner money?

Well, the first place I would look to is the larger corporations. Bill Gates (Microsoft). and his Wife, contribute millions each year to good causes.

How about the Oil companies?
Local businesses that know the problem first hand.
Put out the word to schools and colleges.
Get in touch with a local TV news department.
Contact the local churches.
The local car dealers.

Set up sub committees for each area that you want to cover.
Everything from putting cans in the convenient stores to having cake drives will contribute to the cause.
