Depends what sort of answer you're after...

If God is a human invention, then the idea and the word may have come about at the same time. Or the concept might have been underway before the word was invented, as part of an "earth spirit" or suchlike (this seems most likely to me).

From a scriptural point of view, John's gospel starts quite confusingly: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Which seems to be saying that "the word", and god, are the same thing. (don't thumb-down me for quoting scripture, I did mention the human-invention idea first)

Well, here is what the bible says. John 1:1 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

That is a direct quote from the King James version.

I tell you the answer Jesús is the Word there is no Word God.
Jesus told "... for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the World" John 17 : 24
God is the father and if there is a father there must be a son also who can show him as his father.
The father is showing the Son " see Mathew 3:17 and lo, a voice from heaven, saying this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased" and the son is showing the father.
In thís two personalitys nobody was first, both are in the same time .
I hope its helped you

The word god is fairly recent in human history, but the concept of god or deity isn't. So god was first, then the word for god, which has changed over time.

Interseting question !!!

The word God appeared after the idea.....all you have to look at is documented gods of Greece...Aphrodite, Dionysus, Hera, Poisidon etc. since earliest civilization humans have wanted to believe in a God...the Greeks 5000 years ago did and many generations before them did.If a belief in a God makes a person happy and humanistic I can't see that it is wrong.I practise Buddhism but I believe in God ijn a different way.....God is about Love, society, faith and development.....the word God is irrelevant...it's how you practise your belief

Why would we need the word God if there wasn't one. So I would say God came first.

both wrong. The essence of what appears to be a close approximation, to god, existed first, but it is not god. the word, and need to pray, or have a superior being, has been around, since.....well...god....not that it is one......its a little complicated!

John 1:1 ..,In the beginning was the word and the word was with God.........................in order for the word to be "with God" He had to be there first....Try this....Go to another room in your home or somewhere outside then speak........which got there first??????you or your word?????? God's Name is made up of all consonants as I best understand the original stuff..Hope this helps.....By the way,the Bible does say where God came from...Look it up.......God Bless you as you seek Him.
