Asphalt is sold by the ton. A good rule of thumb is that the density of compacted asphalt is 132#/cubic foot, so just multiply the depth by this and get #/square foot.

For instance, for a 3" section depth, you would have 0.25' * 132#/ft^3, which gives you 33#/sq. ft.

So if you have 5000 sq ft to pave, you estimate 33 * 5000/2000 = 82.5 tons.

If it was 4inches thick then that would be 1/3 foot and you would have 1/3 ft^3
