There are three types of legal immigrant visas: family visas, work visas and diversity visas. If you don't have any immediate family members who are legally in the US and can apply for you, you can't get a family visa. You can get a work visa by having a U.S. company sponsor you. You can get a diversity visa by applying for the yearly diversity visa lottery online. All the information can be found at travel.state.gov. If you only want to go to the U.S. temporarily (even as a temporary worker or student) you can apply for one of the many types of non-immigrant visas, but you can only stay in the U.S. for a limited period of time. You also have to prove that you have a home outside of the U.S. that you don't intend to abandon. If you fear persecution at home, you can register as a refugee and attempt to immigrate in that way, but the numbers are very limited and you would have to meet very strict criteria.
