"Bonjour" is a greeting that literally means "Good Day".

But it sounds very formal and I recommend using "Allo" or "Salut" (don't say the "t", it's mute) with your friends.

It means "Good day" and is used as a greeting right through until evening, when "bonsoir is used". It can also take the form of "Hallo", being both in casual and in formal use.
