And she does have to be thoroughly dried before she goes back in with her puppies because very young puppies get chilled very, very easily.

You can brush her out as best you can while she's in the whelping box and even wipe her down a bit.

As long as she is kept inside and warm wash her anytime after a week, she will drain until then anyways most likely. Just wait until right after the pups have nursed so that they will be sleeping while she bathes and dries. Towel her off well so that she doesn't make the pups cold.
