I have taken sleeping medication for the last several years. I have systemic lupus and insomnia is just one of the side effects. There's a reason you're not sleeping. If the insomnia persists seek the help of a medical doctor.
Like others have said, save your money on the tylenol pm and just buy benedryl (generic form). Too much tylenol is bad for you and even worse if you drink alcohol.
I also find that Unisom is help- there are 2- one which is benedryl and the other Doxylamine succinate 25 mg. I also use passion flower, chamomile, valerian root and lemon balm.
There are also several changes you should make (easier said than done I know).

Too much tylenol can cause liver problems....and those problems can be painful and tylenol PM has diphenhydramine in it (benadryl) which you can become addicted to...you need to talk to your doc about what to take and those that arent addictive are perscription only....you also need to set up a routine in getting to sleep on the days you work wierd hours......like going to bed at a specific time..not staying up later than you should on those days etc

In addition to the risks associated with Tylenol use over time, the active sleep ingredient (diphenhydramine) carries the following warning:
Prolonged insomnia:
Not for use more than 2 weeks. If insomnia persists for more than 2 weeks, consult a physician; it may be a symptom of a serious underlying illness.

The sleeping part of that medication is basically benadryl. The danger is in taking too much tylenol. If you really need something to sleep, ask your doctor. In the meantime, at least switch to something that is just for sleep, without the added pain medication.

I use a product called sleep now , it is all natural has chamomile in it and other things the good thing about it is you do not get groggy from it just helps to calm and get good night sleep when your mind just wont stop to let you sleep, but also a good balanced diet, with out caffeine and sugar might help also.

if you're looking for just help with getting to sleep. . .you might want to try Benadryl (or the generic equivalant). Benadryl is the brand name of the main ingredient (dyphenhydramine) of Tylenol PM. That way, your body only gets what it needs. It's the least habit forming of over-the-counter sleep aid, but I still wouldn't take them every night.

Taking pills every night is not a good thing, especially a sleeping aid. It can also be bad for your liver.

Personally, I don't believe in drugs (consider the side effects), but OTC's are not meant for long periods of time. I do not recommend taking them evey night.
