It all depends on what type of tea you are drinking. First for all teas, start with fresh filtered water. Bring the water to a full boil for black teas, herbals and some oolongs. Use less than boiling for white tea, green and other oolongs.Measure one teaspoon for each cup desired.Pour prepared water over tea, steep according to the below brewing instructions and enjoy!
White tea 3 - 8 mins. Black tea 5 mins.
Green tea 1-3 mins. Herbals 5 mins.
Oolong Tea 1-5 mins, depends on the Oolong.
My suggestion for some really outstanding tea, try the web site, harney.com. Their teas are outstanding and very affordable, they carry a large selection and the above tea timing guide came from their catalog. I LOVE the Chinese flower tea, all you need is one tsp. sugar, no milk and the taste is soooo wonderful!

if you are making black tea or herbal tea the water needs to be at a full rolling boil, steep black tea for only 2-5 minutes the longer you steep it the stronger it will get, steep herbal teas for 7-10 minutes.
if you are making green teas the water should be at a slightly cooler temp, just before it boils, when you see little bubbles in your kettle its the perfect temp, and steep it only 1-3 minutes otherwise it will become bitter.
These instructions are for loose leaf tea but I am sure it would be the same for bagged teas. Add milk or sugar/honey to black tea but I would suggest not to green teas or herbal.
For loose tea the easiest way is either a fine mesh infuser or tea ball preferably stainless steel or a finely woven mesh bag.
oh yea and always always preheat your teapot otherwise you are not using the correct water temp. :) i hope this helps

Take a coffee mug full of water. Put it in the microwave and heat it, then take it out and put a teabag in it. Keep the teabag in it until it's dark. Then take the teabag out and drink the tea. That is the easiest way of making tea. I don't like my hot drinks insanely hot like they serve at restaurants, so I only but the water in for a minute. If you like your tea insanely hot, put it in for 1 and a half minutes or 1 minute and 45 seconds.

The water has to be BOILING not just hot. If making in the cup stir and let it stand for at least a minute.
If making in a pot, warm the pot first but again use boiling water.
