My Dad suffered similar problems to your grandad when out at night, I tried to obtain him a sword stick (something he could carry without looking outwardly offensive) on the internet but you can't buy them in this country (All the laws are weighted on the side of wrongdoers) I made him one out of a folding aluminium walking stick. Cut out the thick elastic that holds it together (that on it's own make a fairly good weapon with a object tied on the end) super glue the bottom three tubes together to form a scabbard and cement a 5cm by 150cm sharpened steel rod (B&Q) into the handle end, One stab in the foot (we don't wan't to hurt the dear little B*****DS too much) will send out a message to them. Basically these feral louts are all cowards, so if you make a stand it realy will stop them.

Tear gas is hard to get hold of and it wears off. however car spray, or road marking spray, or my fave hammerite does infinitely more damage, A few warning squirts across their clothing or jewellery first. Sometimes that's all it takes as the clothes are quite often expensive. If on the other hand they still don't grasp where your going with this then the face will definitely have an impact often blinding permanently whist choking on the fumes and irritating the skin you can then call the police telling them the rough location of the incident knowing that a number of recently blinded youths are not gonna get to far from where you left them and its difficult to miss a group of blind idiots with silver hammerited heads trying to get away. Just think how hard the next few hours will be as they get the scrubbing brush and white spirit treatment. Last thing don't feel to bad about blinding the little f.....s as given the chance they would do it to you the difference is that its hard to lead a criminal life if you can't see a thing so your actions would be doing society a favour. Don't bang em up, forget spending our money on new prisons,Blind em, blind the buggers thats what I say.

all i can say is that your grandad, at his age, does not want to be in the situation where he hurts someone in self defence and gets off of that charge, but then gets charged because he was carrying an illegal weapon. pepper spray, tazer guns... all of that is illegal in the UK and so is carrying anything which can be readily identified as a weapon. knives etc too. but who says that a can of deodorant is a weapon? you ever had that stuff in your eyes? burns like fire. what about a sharp pencil in his pocket? that's just stationary... not a weapon at all... according to the law. but to be honest with you... physical self defence does not have to be entirely physically draining. i would suggest taking him to a class or 2 and see how he gets on. Otherwise another deterrent, why don't they meet up somewhere else and walk to the club together. 2 or 3 of them... (all armed with pencils and sprays too)

Try alternative transportation-maybe a taxi, or someone tro
escourt him there and back.He might not like the idea of an escourt seeing as he is an ex soldier, but maybe just follow him at a close distance, and ask someone at the pub to always politely offer to drive/walk him home/.

i don't think trying to harm them would help especially if there is a group (he can only spray one at a time properly & no doubt the others would defend their stupid mate) also they might seek revenge & god knows what could happen - the taxi is a good idea or you could explain to him how worried you are & offer to drop him off & pick him up - if all else fails get a group of friends togeather & beat the crap out of them explaining that if they touch another oap the same will happen the next night & the next night.................

I'm sorry to hear that about your grandad. Sadly people can be very cruel, and they dont care. Maybe you could go with him sometimes or another relative, or if not maybe he should get a panic button that he could carry around, they alert the police.

I'm told that a cane is pretty good defense. Being an old soldier, he probably knows how to defend himself with a "club," as it is called when used as a weapon.

pepper spray, spray the little beggers right in the eyes! i know what i'd like to do to them.
Good on him for not letting these louts get to him, but he really should take it easier at his age. Good on him though
