The invasion of Grenada in late 1983 can be seen as a small part of the rivalry between the U.S. and Cuba during the Reagan years. A bloody coup in Grenada, along with a perceived threat to American students on the island provided the U.S. with an excellent excuse to eliminate a Marxist regime allied to Fidel Castro's Cuba.

The Cubans sent in military advisers and the next thing ya know there are American civilians being held in the country against their will so Reagan sent in an overwhelming force and kicked Castro's sorry *** adviser's ***'s. Oh, and freed the the American medical students. a generation earlier they probably would have thrown dog **** at their rescuers and called them baby killers 9rather like the Democratic Leadership has been doing the last 3 or 4 years) instead of kissing and hugging them like these young people did. Oh and lets not for get our wonderful news media, they sure haven't changed none since Vietnam, still spewing the doom and gloom, and slanting things to the 'Left'. Sorry, I get wound up some times.

Marxists allied with Fidel castro seized power in a bloody coup. Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and his entire cabinet were executed. The marxist group led by Bernard Coard had threatened to take over 1000 American medical students hostage and to spread marxism by force to neighboring Carribean nations. With the backing of Grenada's terrified neighbors, The US sent in forces to rescue the students and subdue the marxist malitia.

It was a coup by a pro-soviet, pro-cuban militia group who tried to wrest contol from the reigning government.
Yes, there were American students trapped on the island and their only method of communication was via Amateur (ham) Radio.
As I recall, this was not actually an "Invasion" per-se', but rather a rescue mission. The sad part though was seeing our troops hit the beaches in the dead of night and running right into a wall of TV camera's and lights, in fact, many complained of being utterly blinded by the media. Our boys were trying to take up defensive positions and under the cover of darkness only to be exposed by a TV camera and it's extreamly bright light.
This happened again on a much more limited basis in Panama, but by the time the Gulf War broke out in 1991 the Millitary had had enough of the the Media and began re-implementing a more WW-2 style "Embedding" of media.

I believe Cuba had invaded the island and there was a medical school there which many Americans attended. They were held prisoner by the Cubans and Reagan sent our troops in to get them back.
