Is your doctor Irish, per chance?

Many believe that some kinds of alcoholic beverages promote cardiac and arterial health, and can lead to longer life. There is another school of thought that a drink a day promotes a relaxed mindset, and nothing is more highly correlated with heart disease than stress.

I believe that I really like wine and bourbon and scotch and good beer, and that it comes down to a quality of life issue. Because I enjoy them and, in moderation, they have present no substantive health risks, I imbibe regularly.

Don't be afraid of a drink in the evenings... just make sure it's something good ;)

Here are a couple links you may want to check:

http://www.red-wine-and-health.com/

http://archives.cnn.com/2000/HEALTH/diet.fitness/07/03/french.paradox/

That second link is pretty good, not to mention it has leads to other article links at the bottom dealing with the comparisons of wine to regular, non-alcoholic juices.

Basically, there are antioxidants and other chemical compounds in red wine that have been proven to decrease risk of heart disease and possibly certain cancers. Red wine has components that other wines do not, so if you are going to make a habit of introducing alcohol to your daily diets for health benefits I'd certainly go with that. Remember....moderation is the key!

And I've never heard anything about beer being good for your health. However...this site seems to have some good info on the vitamins in beer and such that they've found to be beneficial to your overall health:

Good luck deciding what to do!

Red wine is a good source of resveratrol, which according to the JAMA, has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antithrobatic propeties (prevents blood clots from being formed within blood vessels in the heart). Resveratrol is found in phytoalexins “any of a class of plant compounds that accumulate at the site of invading microorganisms and confer resistance to disease” (Random House Dictionary). It is also one reason that the medical profession believes people in France have lower cardiac problems, despite eating a lot of rich and fatty foods.
