The biggest problem with childhood obesity is that it affects their lifestyle and makes it much more difficult to lose the weight as an adult. An adult who gains weight, but was not necessarily obese their whole lives, has probably been getting a decent amount of exercise in the past - this makes it easier to return to a more active lifestyle and drop the weight. Obese children who grow up to be obese adults have a much more difficult time changing their lifestyle to a more active one because its not something they have done in the past. Learning how to be active after 20 years of sitting on the couch is incredibly hard to do.
Obese children are also at risk for the same health problems later in life that obese adults are (high blood pressure, heart disease, etc). But by far the biggest problem is the affect on lifestyle, which lowers their chances of losing the weight as an adult. Obese children need to work on losing the weight as children because they will grow up enjoying an active lifestyle, which will help them keep the weight off as adults.
