Supermarine Spitfire. It stopped the German advance in the face of overwhelming odds and still was very effective after the war.
The SU-37(47) would whoop the F-22 in an old fashioned dog fight any day. It's a more robust and proven design.

I have my bias's but the C-130 herk has been in production for over 50 years now, and are still being built today. I believe this is because it is the most versital aircraft ever built. It can be modified to do just about any kind of work. Air drops, troop jumps, refueling, or even combat. It is the work horse of the air force and that wont be changing anythime soon.

as far as WW2, the p-51 mustang. modern day, i'd say either the f-15 or the new JSF which has the speed of an f-16 the range of an f-18, the maneuverability of an f-14, and the vertical takeoff ability of a harrier. there are versions being worked on for navy, air force, and the marines.

Well, for WWII, it'd be the P-38 Lightning, and current, would be the F-22 Raptor.

WWII, Definately the P-51
Modern, I'm gonna have to agree with AirForceNut and say the C-130. Theres just something to be said for a plane that can do almost anything.

I like the Marine's Harrier for it's vertical take off and landing, but the SR-71 is hard to beat for sheer cool factor.
