I don't think it's anything really serious, and I think it probably happens to other people too, so maybe someone knows what the correct medical term is for it so I can do some research on it....

Sometimes (rarely though) I "space out" for a few seconds. That's the only way I know how to describe it. Like sometimes when I'm going down the stairs, I'll get close to the botton and then space out and forget how many steps are left for me to step down. Or sometimes maybe I'll be standing in line somwhere and I'll space out for a few seconds and then suddenly "remember" that I'm standing in a line.

I know this sounds really really weird, but if anyone knows what this is, I'd appreciate some feedback.

Eh, I wound't worry too much about it being a medical term. Some peoples mind's wander more than others. Alot of the time our bodies go on automatic, similiar to when we're driving the same route to school everyday etc. This leaves your mind free to wander, and suddenly when it kicks back you get a half-second shock. I imagine when you space out your thinking about something else, and you probaly only space out when your doing routine/non-mentally challenging activities.

If you space out on odd occasions but it does not take over your life, i.e. you can focus most of the time and keep a job etc, then it is NOT likely to be any sort of deficit disorder. There is a possibility you could just be over tired, people have minor memory lapses when tired. Or it could be a form of epilepsy which is not as dramatic as it sounds but have a look on those sites you may recognise something. You can only find out if this is what you have by seeing a doctor who would refer you to a specialist whi would do various tests and scans. Good luck but dont panic about any of these answers, only your doctor will tell you definitely what it is.

Its called being a member of the human race! Nobody's brain is really with it 24 hours a day. Activity like going down a flight of stairs, especially after you have been inactive (sitting down) can cause temporary oxygen loss to the brain. If it gets too frequent, you may want to talk to a cardiologist or respiratory specialist, although heart and lung problems are a worst case scenario.

Just for a few seconds? Thats normal. As long as you are not falling down the stairs as a result. Maybe its just your body and mind's way of telling you that you need more rest? You're body and mind need a break sometimes. Make sure you are getting enough sleep and that you are eating healthy.
Don't focus on it too much, there's no point trying to invent a problem when there really isn't one.

I had a similar issue before. I was so stressed out and anxiety when feeling others were watching me, that its like my mind just tried to escape the pressure and turned inward. Meaning I was no longer aware of my surroundings for a short time. It is tourment for the mind to dwell in places other than in the present surroundings for me.
Hey, check out this term called DEPERSONALIZATION DISORDER. I found out about this when I started feeling "unreal" vs everyone else. Thinking in circles about who I was and "what am I doing here" Overcontemplation...It really bothered me and everyone else lives were so real and aware while I was stuck in a daydream.
Anyway, this may or may not relate to you but I hope I could help

Just to be on the safe side, go see a doctor and ask for an EEG exam (examination of the brain waves). What you describe might be a form of epilepsy known as "petit mal".
If so, then it does not usually get worse, but may be important -eg. when you're driving a car. Good response to treatment.

you could be having seizures, those are the symptoms i had and i was told i was having simple partial seizures. i was doing the same thing, i would stop what i was doing and kinda have a blonde moment. i could hear what was going on and see what was going on but i couldn't react and when it was over i would feel really weird, almost like i didn't know what happened for the last 30 seconds. i had an EEG done and they said i was having seizures in my left temporal lobe, they put me on topamax and now i'm ok. i still have them once and awhile but not nearly as often as i used to before the medicine.

That sounds a lot like me...sometimes it is because of tiredness or hunger. But I don't think it's a serious problem, it happens to a lot of people. Sometimes I'll be in class and just all of a sudden twitch because of tiredness. It's not weird though, totally normal!

It sounds pretty normal to me...for me I usually have so much I am thinking about that I am thinking about something else when I am doing something else if that makes sense.

However medically I don't know anything about seizures...so if that is true you might want to just check.....but really I wouldn't worry about it beyond that :)

You DEFINITLY don't need a psychiatrist...he will only put you on medication which can cause ALOT more harm.

Take care :)
