The only way to have flat abs is to burn fat. No amount of situps will ever give you a six-pack. Situps and similar exercises work the muscles *under* the fat. If you want to be able to see the muscles you've got to lose the fat.

That's all well and good, but how? You have to use more energy than you consume. How do you burn more energy? Aerobic exercise, you've got to get your heartbeat up for extended periods of time.

You should also look at your diet. Eating multiple small meals throughout the day is a good start (it takes energy to digest food, make your body work for you). When I was kick-boxing all the time, I used to eat 5-7 meals a day at about 6500 calories total and I couldn't keep weight on.

What you eat is extremely important. You want to make sure you're getting enough energy to power your motor, without excess getting converted to fat. Fail to eat enough of the right things (protein, carbs), your body will cannibalize muscle. Less muscle means lower metabolism, which means you burn less calories each day.

Finally, you should have realistic goals. You want flat abs by 12/16/06. Even with a good diet and exercise regimen, 1-3 pounds a week of weight loss is excellent. If you think you're going to drop more than 10 pounds in a month, think again. You *can* do it, but it's not a good idea. For one, once you start eating like a normal person you'll rebound MORE weight than you initially lost. Starvation diets are a bad idea in general.

If you can't get to your target weight by the scheduled time, adjust your goals. setting impossible goals only makes people feel depressed and less likely to continue. Instead, set several smaller, easier goals - then have a small reward each time you reach one. This will keep you interested, and on the straight and narrow. For instance, I'd have ice-cream on Saturday if I went to the gym like I wanted to the rest of the week. It's a little thing, but it breaks the monotony. You shouldn't have to weight until you lost every ounce of body fat to indulge - just keep it in moderation - and realize a healthy body is an ongoing process, not something you reach and then slack-off forever.

Cheers,
Odd

diet, diet, diet!! I don't mean that in a negative way. It's all about what you're eating and how many calories you're burning. For me it's easy to show the abs all year long. I run all the time. I also eat all the time. Drink lots of water and run. The more water in, the more water out. If you run 4 times a week and average about 4-5 miles per run with a halfway decent meal plan you can lose 10 pounds easily and those abs will be "abs"olutely gorgeous!!! Good Luck!!

You want to target your abdominal muscles directly (situps, etc.) but they won't show unless you do cardiovascular exercise to burn belly fat. The fattest guy in the world could potentially have a six pack but he can't see it because of his fat.

Do curls with the barbell, but also do situps, just so the blood will flow longer.
