Depends from state to state. I live in a small town and have three kids ages 5, 6, and 8. I leave them in the car when I am only going to run in and pay a bill, or pay for gas. Us mothers know how hectic it can be to want to go in for one fast thing to have three kids (more or less) getting in and out and diverting them from the candy rack. I don't see anything wrong with it, I do it as long as I can see my car.
I don't think it is illegal here where I live, though I don't know about other places.

Where I live, on a military post, it's not legal. But even if it were legal, it wouldn't be a good idea. Kids can easily climb around in a car and knock it into drive or reverse and cause a wreck. Or worse, one kid could get out of the car and get run over by the car itself or another car driving by. In the city I used to live in a lady left her son in the car for "just a minute" and that was enough time for a thief to jump in her car and take off, with her son in the back. She was lucky, the guy dropped the kid off in an alley behind some houses where someone found him and called the police, there could have been a much sadder outcome. Never, ever leave your kids in the car unattended. Even if it were to take an hour to get your kids in and out of the car, that's still better than taking that risk of leaving them. I really doubt that it takes 30 minutes to get the kids in. My friend and I have 3 kids between us, we get them all buckled in the back seat of any of our cars in about 5 minutes.

Addendum: Just because there isn't a specific law in Arkansas -- doesn't mean you can't get arrested or have your kids taken away from you based on another charge. Best bet -- take your kids with you.

Eleven states have laws protecting children left unattended in cars. The states with this legislation are: California , Connecticut , Florida , Illinois , Louisiana , Maryland , Nebraska , Nevada, Pennsylvania , Texas , and Washington.
Kentucky and Missouri have laws that take effect if an injury or fatality occurs when a child is left unattended in a motor vehicle.
At least six states have pending legislation including: Hawaii , Iowa , Massachusetts , Missouri , Oklahoma, and Tennessee.
In short, it depends where you live.
Personally, I'd rather spend the extra 30 minutes to insure my kid's safety than live through a lifelong of regret should something happen to them.

I'm not sure if it's legal or not but how could you do something that stupid? I have 2 children who are 1 1/2 and 2 1/2. It's a pain in the butt to get them in and out of my minivan but I do it. Even if it's just me with my daughters I will get them out. Do you know how many times I came waltzing into the gas station with a baby in each arm? Have you ever watched the news? There have been numerous cases where a child is left strapped into a car and someone decides to steal the car. Usually the child is found dead when that happens. Some parents....

In australia a couple of years ago a woman left her baby 1 yr old son in the car while she posted a letter. Someone stole her car with the baby inside. He dumped the car after realiseing the bub was in the back. It was a very very hot day and he left the windows up. By the time the police found the car the baby had suffocated and died. Why risk it. There are a lot of people you cant trust and you never know where they will be.

It could be considered child endangerment plus it is just plain stupid. My dad had a friend who left there kids in the car just for a bit. Well, the 3 year old stuck his head out the widnow and at the same time rolled the automatic window up. The child ended up crushing his trachea and dying. The parents have had to live with that all these years now. Enough said
Post Script: If it is too much trouble to get them in and out of an Exploerer than get another car or just suck it up and put her kids safety in front of her convience.

There is NO way it takes 30 minutes to get your kids in and out of a car. Are you handicapped in someway that would make it take you thatt long? If not- please practice with a doll until you can get it to the less then one minute is should take to put them in and fasten the belt.

Look at this undercover news story and I bet you NEVER do that again.
Your FIRST job in your life right now is to protect your child. Nothing is more important then that.
Wheter there is a law about it varies by state. More and more states are adopting it. I would vote for it.

Wow, you have to be kidding! You should never leave any children unattended. Do you know that it only takes a minute for your child to be kidnapped, or your vehicle stolen with your children in it. You should be completely ashamed of yourself. And you should be turned in to CPS. What could you possibly have to do that would only take a minute? I wouldn't be surprised, by the way you care so much for your kids, if it was a dope run. If it's not illegal where your from then it most definitely should be.

Of course it is illegal! Someone could have stole your children and your car. Or, one of the kids could have gotten out of it's carseat
and accidentally knocked the car out of park & killed all of them and even passers by.
Why would you do this? I understand how it takes a while to get kids in & out of carseats but it sounds like YOU AND YOUR FRIEND left 3 kids unattended! Why in the world couldn't ONE of you waited in the car while the other adult went inside???? There's no excuse for one of you not staying behind to supervise.
This is why people should have to pass a competency test before they reproduce!
And seriously, youre lucky the police didn't see you. They could have ticketed you or they could have taken your kids away for child endangerment. Please don't make this same mistake again. Nothing is more important than your child's safety.

"Im sorry but to get three kids to sit up striaght fastened back into an explorer really does take awhile" Then don't take them with you, hire a baby sitter. If it is too much trouble for you to be concerend about their safety maybe you should HAVE them.
