Ok, my sister is going crazy. She is 25 years old. A few months ago she was put on Prozac for depression. Since then she has kicked her husband out and gone through I don't know how many men. She has a daughter.

Tonight she got into a fight with her boyfriend and he came by to tell me that she was threating to kill herself. I am scared for her and my neice. I just want to help.

I tried speak to her Dr. about her behavior after being put on the drug, but because of HIPPA he could not help.

What can I do?
Who can I call?
Where can I turn?
I live in Pennsylvania. Does anyone know the laws or where I can find them?
Can I commit her?

PLEASE HELP!!!

I think the question is, Will your sister listen to you? Can you talk to her about getting help. I know that Prozac can cause mood changes in some people. She may need something different. I don't know if she is going crazy, but she need to worry more about her daughter than men. And more about herself. I hope she don't think any man is worth killing herself over. Try going to Doctor with her then you can be there to help the Doctor with questions he may ask her. I know any good Doctor will have her come in every3 or 4 weeks until he get her meds. right. Good luck and watch out for your family.

Sorry I dont know the laws in your part of the world but if you have urgent concerns you should contact the police, if you think she is a danger to herself or others then ring the police and they will help you get her assessed and committed. You coukd also get her assessed by telling your local authority your are concerned about your neices welfare, they may put her in your care but will also assess your sister to see if she is able to look after your neice. Your sister may not forgive you for any of this but you may be saving her life. Good luck.

Call the police and tell them what you just told us.

Also call her doctor and tell him/her what you just told us. You can find out who the doctor is by looking at the lable of the prescription medicine that she is using. All doctors are in the phone book. If no one answers at the doctors office many times there are instructions on the answering machine as to what to do in an emergency. That IS what this is.

If all of that fails call the pharmacy where she is getting the prescriptions filled. They should have a plan as well and will give you help.

Get busy!

I agree with Steve B. You need to call the police now. Where she is threathing to kill herself. It means she might to something to herself. I sounds like she is having a major side effect to prozac.

Rare side effects:
Hepatitis caused by Drugs Severe
Inflammation of Skin caused by an Allergy Severe
Seizures Severe
Swollen Lymph Nodes Severe
Abnormal Liver Function Tests Severe
Reaction due to an Allergy Severe
Allergic Reaction causing Serum Sickness Severe
Low Blood Sugar Severe
Low Amount of Sodium in the Blood Severe
Behaving with Excessive Cheerfulness and Activity Severe
Mild Degree of Mania Severe
Having Thoughts of Suicide Severe

She's needs to be taken off of it asap.

The same thing happened with my sister.

DONT CALL THE POLICE! the police have no idea what to do in situations like this and are usually only interested in arresting someone. Take her to a hospital, call her doctor, intervene with family.... if u call the police, this will be another problem you will have to deal with, not to mention your sister will probably hate you the rest of her life... the police are not trained in mental health.. The best thing to do is to get a hold of her Doctor right away!!! she needs a different medication, Prozac is well known to cause people to freak out at times... there are many other medications out there...

If you do some research you will find that Prozac has created this kind of thing more times than people I think know about...from woman killing their children...to kids in school killing other kids...you will find that 99% of them were on medication sad but true.
In regards to your sister...depending on how long she has been on it...I would find out how to mecially safe get her off of it immediatly....
For help...sincerely you should contact

Just know that IF you take her to the hospital they will only either A evaluate her and put her on another drug.
B retrain her and put her on another drug.
There are other solutions. Good luck :(

If you haven't already discussed it with your family, that should be the first step. Remind her of the safety of her daughter in getting her to listen to you about ensuring that she see another doctor if this one is not helping her.

You cannot commit her though unless it's proven that she is a danger to herself, her daughter or others. Besides, the goal will be to help her, not to have her committed.

How far away does she live? Can you go see her? Call her, try to talk to her and if you are really worried, call the police. Something similar happened with my sis-in-law and they found her unconscious and took her to the ICU... so really, don't think twice. After all - what would be worse, false alarm or someone getting hurt???

if u r really concerned and willing to put her in the hospital for a whle u can call the police and if they think she is a danger to herself she can b put in the hospital for three days for an assessment. if they think she needs to b kept longer they will keep her.

Whatever you do, don't call the police. They are not medical doctors. You need to get family together, along with her doctor right away!!
