Bound's hubby here:

First, remember the PA law that requires the use of manually operated firearms... no semi-autos. This leaves you with two styles of handgun, revolvers and single shot pistols. Keep in mind your typical shot will be at about 40-50 yards, you will need to be able to hit a 6 inch target consistently at your maximum distance.

In revolver .357 Mag is the absolute minumum to use. A .41 or .44 Mag or a .45 Long Colt would be better.

In single shot pistols (the Thompson Center Contender) any rifle cartridge barrel could do, but I would suggest the .30-30 barrel. You will get close to the same performance as a .30-30 rifle in a handgun.

Good luck.

Nothing less than a 41. Magnum, preferably a .44 Magnum. The higher calibers such as the 454 Casull, .460 S&W, .500 S&W are very expensive per round, humongous recoil, and strictly an overkill.

First, check the applicable laws. Having said that, I do not recommend anything as light as a .357 mag. It is a pretty powerful round but marginal for a good clean kill on a deer. I prefer my .44 mag or my .454 Casull. Both have a considerable recoil but if you can handle it, they will do the job reliably. This assumes, of course, that you can do your part by putting the bullet where it does the most good

If you are a good shot the minimum is the .357 Magnum with at least a six inch barrel. A .10mm Glock hunter, .41 Mag., .44 Mag. or even bigger is better.

Handgun hunting is for experts, or born of necessity. Use a rifle. You'll be happier with the results.

I've been happy with the results using a .357 with 158 grain JHP ammo.
