A female usually comes in her 1st heat around 9 months of age, bigger size dogs can be earlier, her vagina will start swelling up and she will lick to clean herself more often than usual. She will start bleeding about 10 days after she starts swelling up and can bleed for about 7 days.

As I understand it, a dog's period is the beginning marker for her heating cycle. There may be some advance signs: vaginal swelling and discharge. During the first 7 days she is normally in the Pro-estrus stage where she will not allow males to breed with her. She is normally a little swollen in her vaginal area. When she is really in heat and ready to reproduce is during the Estrus stage. During this stage, she will stand still and seem receptive to advancements of males mounting her our someone touching her back. Her vaginal area may have additional swelling and she may clean her private area more than normal. This stage normally lasts 7 to 9 days. Then, she will go into the Di estrus stage. This is the stage that she is not receptive to male advancement. However, each female is different, and if you are not interested in breeding her, you should keep her away from other males. No one explained to me that you should not walk a female in heat by yourself. Some resistant males can become very difficult t deal with.
