Yorkshire is the biggest county in the whole of England. Its officially one of 'the northern' regions of England. Its pretty big so you need to decide where and what you want to visit.
For example - the landscape of North Yorks is very different from W Yorks, as is S Yorks! But perhaps the predominant feature is rugged 'moorland' - mile after mile of bleak and harsh (but beautiful) hills, rocks and mountains. http://www.north-york-moors.com. Yorkshire was heart of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th Century, so you have some amazing industrial buildings and heritage, but you also have a lot of culture and art to check out (i.e. the Bronte sisters, York Minster, Viking York etc)
Look at the national parks site for the various national parks that rest within the Yorkshire boundary - http://www.nationalparks.gov.uk/index.htm . Another useful site is http://www.yorkshirevisitor.com - if you are looking for places to stay and things to visit - but if you are on a limited budget, I definitely recommend the cheap, but good quality Youth Hostels - see http://www.yha.org.uk/Find_Accommodation/Regional/Navigation.html
You asked about 'which large city' is is close to. Well, one of the great things about Yorkshire is the proximity of towns and cities to each other (in comparison to the rest of England). For example large towns and cities such as Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Huddersfield, Harrogate, York, Skipton are all within sensible distances of each other. For flights, you are probably best checking out Leeds/ Bradford airport, but its more likely that you would get a good deal to Manchester UK - which is only a 35 minutes train ride from Leeds, for example.
Have travelled all over the world and Yorkshire is still my favourite place...

As others have said, Yorkshire is a county...the biggest in the country. It is split into Ridings and I live in Skelmanthorpe near to Huddersfield in the West Riding. There is also a North and South Riding, there used to be an East but that has been changed to Humberside. The main cities of Yorkshire and Humberside are...
York
Hull
Leeds
Bradford
Sheffield
Yorkshire is home to spectacular countryside and is home to The Yorkshire Dales and The Yorkshire Moors....you will not be lost for places to go and things to see and do....
The Leeds/Bradford airport is the closest as it is in Yorkshire but I'm not sure if it takes flights from Canada. The closest after that is Manchester, and you should be able to get a train from there.
Hope you make it over here and have a thoroughly enjoyable time... don't forget to brings LOADS of money!
You will find loads of information on this site...

Yorkshire borders the penines.... :-) Its just above the centre of England... (derbyshire). Yorkshire is a county..... not a city by the way.... some of the cities located within Yorkshire are: York, Sheffield, Leeds etc.. Im not sure where to tell you to fly to.. as not all airports are big enough to deal with trans atlantic flights.... erm you could check Leeds/bradford airport? manchester isnt too far away (although thats in Lancashire)

Yorkshire is in the North of England - it's a great part of the country (and that's a big compliment coming from a Londoner!).
The best international airport I would look up flights for is Manchester.

Yorkshire.... largest county in England....... split into:
North Yorkshire (The largest of the Yorkshires)
South Yorkshire
West Yorkshire
East Yorkshire
There are at least 3 Cities in yorkshire:
Sheffield (at the most southern end of the county)
Leeds
York
Yorkshire (as a rough guide) Starts on the East Coast, somewhere just above Kingston-upon-Hull (or "Hull" for short) on the Humber Estuary, and goes up the coast about as far north as just below MIDDLESBROUGH...... I think it incorporates Darlington, where nearby there is "Durham-TeesValley Airport" (regular connections to places like Heathrow & Gatwick airports, among others)...... goes west to around the pennines (big mountain range down the middle of the UK) and back down south to somewhere below Sheffield.
There's also "Leeds-Bradford Airport"....... and there's also a TransPennine Express service (run by FIRSTGROUP) that goes from Manchester Airport to Leeds, York & Middlesbrough.
A useful reference book is
THE MICHELIN GREEN GUIDE: Great Britain
(it's absolutely stuffed full of information, and isn't too big to lug around with you).

I usually fly into to heathrow, take the underground to kings cross and then the train to yorkshire (I was born in hull), you may be able to fly to leeds, but I never have.
At the very least you should try to visit the Yorkshire moors, the Yorkshire Dales, York. Robinhood's bay on the east coast in nice to visit.

cities? not cities ? ok, I agree Liverpool is remarkable. Newcastle is worth a go, and Edinburgh is amazingly on the brink of the sea. more effective north, Aberdeen is interesting. do not pay interest to those who knock Liverpool. maximum have both not in any respect set foot there, or were there years and years in the past even as Thatcher's nasty regime tore the heart out of what became a good city and what's one now back, at very last!!!!
