I am really scared of shots and needles in general. I have to get two (tetanus and flu) very soon. I just freak out at the thought, and I know i'll freak even more when I go to have it done. What is the best diversion trick you know for someone REALLY scared of needles. How can I relax and keep my mind off of it? I need lots of advice please.

You can listen to music, bring it with you and keep the ear plugs in and stare at one image or sing along. The person who does your injection should have their own diversion techniques. I use to talk and make alot of eye contact, and I'd also smack the site real loud so it stings..."owww"...while the patient is "owwing" I'd give the injection. When I was through, they'd always say, "when are you going to give me the shot"...and I had done it already. They just didn't feel it. I'd say relax, listen to the music and smile...or hey you can smack yourself at the site. It makes it sting...you won't feel a thing! Godloveya....you're gonna do ok!

You can get the nasal spray for the flu, instead of the shot.
Talk to the nurse during the process, but dont watch if you think it will bother you. I was afraid of needles, and never watched, and one day by accident, watched, and it cleared up my fear.
Also, do not have them count, or say, youre going to feel a pinch, that already hipes you up.
Just tell them, stick me, and get it over and done with. I do not want to know when you do it,
They taught us in Nursing School to count to 3 for the person, and I never have. I feel if you are warning the person, they get anxious.

Good Luck

This is the case of something dreaded being worse than it really is. Best thing that I do myself, is not look at the lnjection when it happens. If I do feel something, I try my best to relax the area that its happening in. I think to myself, this is something that will help you even though it may hurt for a second or two.

the best way to get needle is to relax, take few deep breaths and just let it go,and don't look, think of best time in your life, you will see that is not painful,i donate blood every two months, and needle is much thicker that you will have and i almost don't feel nothing,by being tens you will feel more because mussels contract and than you will feel,by relaxing your mussels are loose,so you will feel almost nothing, good luck,it is really works.

Mother tries wiggling her left big toe. I generally find something else to stare at. It doesn't hurt as much if you stay relaxed- Like a wet noodle.
