First read everything at this site. http://www.usps.com/passport/
You should fill out the form and gather the proper documents before you go to the Post Office. Use the locality search button to find the hours that your closest post office accepts applications. The site will also tell you if the pictures can be taken at the post office.
By all means, avoid going on Saturday or just before closing. The lines at that time are very long. Also, apply well before your trip or you will add on $60.00 to the normal $97.00 fee.

Here in the Philippines, we apply at the Department of Foreign Affairs. Since I am a Filipino American, I carry 2 passports whenever i travel. I renew my American passport in the US Embassy here.
Check on your embassies! Ask some people who had travelled. Different countries have different ruling. Some embassies only entertain those people with appointment. Check also the requirements like birth certificate. Ask also how much it cost. by knowing the requirements & the cost, will save you time!

the post office is where u get it.. you will need your mother and father's place of birth, your legal birth certificate, if you do not have yor birth certificate, you will need to go to your state government office building to get a copy, if you do not know where this office building is, the post office will be able to tell you.. you will also need 2 pictures.. you can have these taken at the post office, or you can go to a place like Wal-Mart for your pic... it costs about $50 for a passport, and it will take about 6 weeks for them to mail it to u...
