She is not doing anything that she believes is wrong. She was taught this by her mother, when the mom kept the nest clean. When mom became too overwhelmed to keep clean after all the litter, the pups were good little helpers and did it themselves....They didn't have gloves and bags, so just did it the way they could. She is just being fastidious. Scolding for it will only confuse her. She will not get the point, and you will have a insecure and traumatized dog...The reason that she leaves part of it, is that it is just too much, but she is doing the best she can to clean her own mess..
Dog's ancesters have done this for eons, to keep their area clean and to not let predators know where they live. It is as natural for them as hand washing is for people.
The only solution is to consistantly beat her to it. Hopefully she will learn that you can be trused to clean it up so she doesn't have to.... Meanwhille, there is an additive available at all pet supplies that will make the stuff very bitter.(Forbid) This may help some... Also putting a few pieces of pineapple in her food will do the same..
Note: the ones that do this are usually the easiest to house train, as they are good house keepers

It's definately not gonna hurt your puppy to eat her own poo. It's call copraphagia. Puppies explore everything with their mouths. And occasionally, the find something they like, like poo. The bad thing is after she eats her poop, she comes and licks you. This can be a way to transmit paraites (if she's carrying any) to you. Some ideas to make her poo taste bad (er...) are trying to give her a little canned pumkin with her meals- it makes poo bitter. Also there are some commercially availabe treatments. The one we find that works the best is For-Bid. The good news is that most puppies out grow this yucky habit, so hang in there. By the way. It does NOT mean she's missing anything nutritionally.

clean poop up as soon as she eliminates and you won't have this problem. if the poop is there she'll do it again, dogs recycle their food. make sure your feeding a premium food, she may be lacking
nutrients in her diet. keeping the poop cleaned up keeps her from starting a bad habit and from grossing you out to. out of sight out of mind!

It could be the kind of food you are feeding the pup. We switched our puppy's food and he quit doing it. I think it is fairly common for puppies to do this and maybe she will grow out of it.
