Make space its a trip of a lifetime you can throw away that sarong t-shirt, send me an e-mail if you want tips on travelling light, get a canon eos with lenses etc 10 million pixels fast shots, plus a small camera as some good suggestions above. I have been travelling around the world for 22 years now, the only way to get the great shots is with an SLR, small one can get good ones but not the greatest, when are you going to do the trip a second time and see?

I agree that the Fuji Finepix range are by far the best. But you know, I have the professional Finepix and I have a compact and to be honest you cannot really tell the difference whilst using automatic settingss. So unless you really want to get into the manual settings, just go for a compact. The best tip I can give you is to buy as many storage cards as you can afford. Buy them online though and not from the suppliers of the camera ... there are lots of good deals and you can use a generic card.

Good luck and have a great trip!

first of all think about the power situation - are you going places wer u can get at a power outlet? if so get a universal adaptor and a camera with a rechargeable bettery, saves u hunting for aa batterys all the time and thy run out so quick. Also a good idea to take a couple of memory cards aswell as ur usb connection so tht ifu come accross an internet cafe u can burn thm onto disc and free up ur mem cards secondly think about the spec of camera. At the min there are loads of high quality compact cameras on the market at very reasonable prices. Anything over a 7 megapixel would be great but preferrably 10 mega pixel as its better quality but the 7 wudnt take up as mch space on the mem card. Also a good idea to find a am with ASR (anti-shake reduction) for those quick snaps tht u dont want blurry - normally handy whn uve had a few drinks. although a canon camera is believed to be the best make u can spend the same on a 5MP canon as what you can on a 10MP samsung which i think are just as good. anyway have fun on ur trip

Hiya.
a) Forget a huge number of Mega Pixels. 3 will be more than adequate to enlarge to A4 size.
b) Get one with either SD or MM Card facility, and buy a couple of extra cards. 1gig cards are about £12 (sterling).
c) Get the right kind of batteries and a quick recharger (4 batteries for a camera that uses 2 at a time is a good idea).
d) Buy a light weight and pocket slim camera. Bulk is a no-no when travelling.

Look at unfashionable brands: BenQ Kodak etc You can get great deals.

I took a BenQ around Oz for three months and took some amazing pics. (Only filled two cards, too!)

I just bought my boyfriend a new Samsung NV10 compact digital, shop around on the web for about £220.

It's small, but has a massive 10 megapixels, takes SD cards which you can get a 2GB card for (cheap off amazon) and will take a couple of hundred pictures, loads of easy to use settings, good zoom and video settings too and the photos we got off it from our travels are fantastic, amazing quality, better than my SLR in all honesty.

Resets really quickly so you don't have to wait for ages and really nice to use, smart looking and compact too. We did a lot of research before buying and it always got top reviews, and we can thoroughly recommend it. We've had canon, fuji (which kept going wrong, switching itself off and all sorts) and olympus and this out strips them all by miles.

Have a great trip!

In general 4 things are important in digital
pixels digital zoom an independent viewfinder and a good sd card 2 1 gig cards should about do
you know the old adage how large should I build my shed
think of a number and double it.buy a reputable make canon, Panasonic, and stay away from bid TV go into a reputable store get the make and model you like then search the web for price hope this helps oh yeah the quicker you get it the better it will take you awhile to get through the instructions

where are you going first? Can get some good deals on Cameras in Thailand- I have a Richo. However I think your memories will capture more than a camera ever can. My advice is to get a cheap digital, download the pictures as often as possible so when you lose it its not a big financial loss, and you can buy another cheap cmera. I lost/broke 2 cameras and 3 phones on a years travelling (maybe just unlucky).
Spend time having fun, not worry ing about cameras. Enjoy

@ the end of the day its down to taste and budget! I have been using a lot of Fuji products! but would recommend most products including canon, olympus, nikon the list goes on! Go to your local camera shop and ask to try out some compact DC's.

Don't forget to budget for a fairly large Memory card if you are unable to download to a PC you will require that!

Good Luck!

For me, I would buy either a Canon Ixus, or a Panasonic for the electronics. At least three proper batteries, two 512MB cards (or greater), but don't hope for that good a zoom on a compact - probably better to go for one that gives average zoom (always optical) and better features and quality, avoid a camera that is loaded with gimmicks.

Hi Suzi

Your best bet if to go for a canon. Ricoh's are ok but fuji's dont really do it for me ( cheaps parts and lenses ) Sony have far too much colur saturation and overcharge on zeiss lenses.
Good luck with the trip
