One of the most versatile wines I know that pairs well with cheese is Chasselas (retail about $20.00). This grape results in a full, dry and fruity white wine. It will compliment most white, yellow and orange cheeses. I agree with the person above who suggested pairing blue vein cheese with aged Port as this is an exceptional pairing. For hard cheeses such as, manchego asiago and etc. reds such as Italian Bardolino, Spanish Riojas and the like.

It would all depend on the kind of cheese you are serving, by the way I'm no expert but I reckon the following combinations go well.
Brie/ camembert with sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio
Blue cheese with a shiraz, pinotage or quality merlot, chateau neuf du pape would be superb
Swiss cheese with possibly an oaked chardonnay
Hard cheese such as mature cheddar with a pinot noir
smoked cheese with a chablis
That's my opinion anyway

Basically, there are four types of wine: appetizer, dessert, dinner and sparkling.
Appetizer wines: Sherry, ranging from Fino through Pale Dry
Dessert wines: Ports, Ruby, Tawny, and White.
Dinner wines: Red, White, and Rose. The red: Burgundy, Claret and Chianti; the White: Sauterne, Rhine and Chablis.
Sparkling wines: Champagne, Pink Champagne and Sparkling Burgundy.
I would chose from these various wines, perhaps two from each grouping, with the exception of Sparkling, in which case, I would chose one.

American Artisanal Camembert - try a fruity gamay.
English Farmhouse Cheddar - smooth port or a bittersweet stout
Cougar Gold - it can go with a wassail, or almost any wine
Gorgonzola Dolce - sweet Italian white
Morbier au Lait Cru - a light, fruity red
Taleggio -
a full-bodied Italian red such as a Chianti

Vintage port with blue cheese and a few reds: one Merlot with lighter and Cabernet Avignon/Shiraz for stronger cheese. If you want white I would choose Gewurztraminer.

Vintage port and blue cheese are really good together. Go to your local wine shop and they can guide you.
