My husband and I have a debate. I said, nationwide there are more academic scholarships that give students a full ride. He says there are more athletic scholarships that give students a full ride. Statistically, I know that's impossible given that, in any give school, athletes are a minority in a student body. Any links or stats I can use? U.S. News World Report, etc.?

Wow. I've looked all over, and I can't find anywhere that breaks it down between athletic scholarships and academic scholarships. This is unsurprising - if there were more full-ride athletic scholarships, I doubt colleges would want to let that fact get out.

From the NCAA: Over 126,000 student-athletes receive either a partial or full athletic scholarship. However, these scholarships are awarded and administered directly by each academic institution, not the NCAA.

From the National Center for Education Statistics, there were 19,054,000 undergraduates enrolled in 2003-2004, of which 63.2 received aid. That's 12 million students - 95 times as many athletes that receive aid.

Unfortunately, neither statistic shows how many full-ride scholarships are available. However, given the 94:1 ratio of athletic scholarships to other scholarships, and the fact that full-ride scholarships are a.) limited by sport by the NCAA, and b.) rare outside major sports, it's unlikely that the total number of athletic full-ride scholarships are greater than the total number of other full-ride scholarships, across the entire field of US colleges, including ones that do not have athletic scholarships at all (such as Division III schools).

uhmmmm NO. No person has the right to make a demand like that on their spouse. I don't think any decent person WOULD insist something like that. It just shows how insecure and overprotective a wife would be to permanently brand her husband just to show others that he's taken. Isn't a ring enough?
