A friend of mine had dobermans, they are very very active dogs and can sometimes be aggressive.

My grandparents bred and sold Dobermans for years. They were highly prized as guard dogs, and they always kept my grandfather company around the yard and helped Grandma sleep at night. The best puppies were the ones that were well-socialized to humans, and these grew up to be the dogs that the grandparents trusted around the grandkids. Those who were not properly socialized, or were the result of incestuous breeding, were of inferior disposition or intelligence.
PLEASE make sure you use a reputable breeder. Don't buy from a breeder who says their dogs "have papers and everything," because "papers" only certify that the dog is pure bred, not that it is healthy or superior in some way. Ask questions, get a health-guarantee, and make sure you spend lots of time having fun with your puppy.
If you aren't dead set on a Doberman, I would suggest finding a mixed-breed puppy. They're usually healthier, more intelligent, relatively free of genetic disorders, and less expensive.

I love doberman dogs. I had one at one time that was called a big red doberman. Everyone seems to be afraid of them, but mine was a big baby, and thought he was a lap dog. He would lay his head on my lap. Don't worry what other people think, like they may turn on their owner. That is not a common thing. Any dog can be mean if they are treated terrible. Alot of love for your pet is inportant. My mailman would not come in my yard to deliver mail, even though I had my doberman chained up. They are good watch dogs for protection.

Dobermans are nice dogs but they get really overprotective you need to find some materials and read up on the breed. I want a doberman too but my son is 3 yrs old so i am gonna wait a while longer.

I really like Dobermans, but they do tend to be aggressive and over protective; I'd rather get a Golden Retriever! Loyal, smart, full of energy, protective without being overly aggressive, great watch dogs (even though they'd probably end up kissing the burglars!)...I have a rescue Golden, named Honey, who's about 100 pounds, about 1 1/2 years old and is a big old goofy gal who is so smart and affectionate it's just amazing!

I rescued a dobermann - he was very dominant & aggressive - both with people and other dogs. He would have been put down if I hadn't taken him.
With a few months of love, care, lots of long walks in the countryside and training, he transformed into the most loving, loyal dog.
Very intelligent, and exceptional guard dogs - they will protect you AND your family (generally, they don't eat your children as some seem to think!! - mine would have died protecting them)
.... though the second I said hi to a visitor and let them in, he would wag his tail like an idiot and roll over for a tummy tickle! All of my friends loved him, even people who said they'd been terrified of big dogs previously, as he was such a friendly buffoon!
I would say if you have any hint of aggression from a well bred dobie - then it is a problem with the upbringing.
These are big dogs, so as long as you are keen to put the time in - lots of exercise and training - you'll be rewarded 100-fold. They are superb dogs, and you'll have many years of fun.
NB make sure that you see the parents of your puppy.. if the breeder is reputable they will be more than happy for you to meet them. If they are nice dogs...your pup should be too.

Sweet, loyal, playful pranksters - nothing like people tend to think they are. Go to www.akc.org & buy from a breeder that is in your closest local Doberman club that tests & certifies their breeding dogs free of hip dysplasia & Von Willebrands (a type of hemophilia). Good luck!

My parents had a doberman he was the softest animal you could imagine. He was brill with kids and other dogs the only problem they had with him was that he was frightened of air balloons and would run until it was out of his sight. He lived till he was 13 and broke my parents hearts when he died.
