Men get worked up when the argue and need to cool off. A guy cools off by getting away from whatever started the whole mess. Generaly, that is you. Guys need to be alone for the cool off...and alone to a guy is far away.
Of course, most guys also get physicaly violent when they argue, and if they stay they may hit or hurt someone. And the guy does not want to let that happen.

Because they have had enough of the argument and would like to have some thinking time.

they know most of the time they loose and if they leave that gives them the one up on us.(my husband always leaves) but he should just stay because when he gets back that just gave me more time to think of better arguments with him

They leave because they can. It makes THEM feel better. Women are then left with the unresolved problem to simmer and eat away at them.
This is disrespectful, passive-aggressive and immature behavior. Adults should act like adults. Period.
