MOPP is the acronym for "Mission Oriented Protective Posture".

There is no such thing as a "MOPP suit" -- that is a bastardization of the term. It is more correctly termed "Individual Protective Equipment" (IPE) -- which consists of a protective mask (respirator), protective clothing (suit), protective gloves, and protective boots.

The horribly misnamed "MOPP suit", more correctly called a protective overgarment, is a specially manufactured and treated garment that will absorb liquid and vaporous chemical warfare agents, preventing them from reaching the skin and causing damage to the wearer. There are many variations on the basic theme -- I used to wear the old green Chemical Protective Overgarment (CPO or CPOG), which was replaced by the Battle Dress Overgarment (BDO), and now the Joint Service Lightweight Integrated Suit Technology (JSLIST). Other nations have their own versions of the same types of protective clothing.

And while every nation has its own versions of masks, gloves, boots, and protective garments, all the NATO allies subscribe to the concept of MOPP.

it stands for Mission Oriented Protective Posture... it deals with a potential hazerdous environment, one that would be created due to the use of weapons of mass destructions... there are specific levels, that consist of a variation of wearing a gas mask, chemical protective overgarments, rubber gloves, and rubber boot covers.

Mission Oriented Protective Posture...

Not just worn by the Army and Marines !! We had to wear them during the 1st Gulf War flying surface surveillance missions off an unnamed USN Frigate... GAWD they were hot, uncomfortable, and annoying !!
