The market is flooded witha lot of good hair straighteners. The main features to look for in any brand are:
1) Ceramic coated or solid ceramic plates. Note that the ceramic coating wears off over time, but this does not overly affect the performance of a hair iron.
2) Ceramic heating element. This allows a hair straightener to heat up in a matter of seconds. Cheaper irons don't have this and can take up to 90 secionds to get hot enough to use.
3) Variable heat up to 220 degrees. Hair irons rely on extreme temperatures to straighten hair effectively. The lower temperature irons may not perform as well.
Good hair straightener brands include GHD (expensive with a great reputation), Hair Tools, Remington (excellent low budget irons) and GA.MA's.

I recommend the paul mitchell flat iron. Most will recommend the CHI, however, I like the PM one, because you have temperature control, whereas, the CHI does not. Temperature control is so important, because of the texture of an individual's hair. If you have fine hair, you don't need as much heat to straighten, and too much heat will burn the hair. This iron allows versatility for all hair types.

the only one that doesn't mess up your hair and doesn't give you split ends is the ceramic one. My friend has a ceramic one called the Convertable its about $100 when it is on sale
