Took this drug for about 3 months. First 3 weeks, the difference was amazing. After that, I vomited every night just before bed, had insomnia and a total loss of sex drive. Quit taking them shortly after.

PROZAC is a very dangerous medication but can also be a very helpful medication if used properly and you are watched very closely by your doctor.
My daughter was on Prozac for well over 8 months and for the first 6 weeks we saw an amazing difference but after that she just didn't seem to feel right and had seemed to slip into a deeper depression which lead to many suicidal thoughts (even at age 8)and after eliminating all other possibilities we took her off the med (with her doctor and psychiatrist's orders) With Prozac you have to watch that you don't fall into a greater depression and start having suicidal thoughts as that is one of the major side effects of this medication.Just keep up with your doctor pats and seeing your psychiatrist or physiologist and they can help you keep on the med or change it to one that is better suited for you
she is now on another med and that has helped her greatly.

Fluoxetine is the generic chemical name for Prozac. Yes, I have taken it for mild depression...I believe I was on that particular medication for about 2 years. I had very few side effects except the usual stuff in the beginning--rapid heartbeat, feeling "speedy", some mild nausea, and light-headedness. Are you asking your question because you're wanting to know side effects? Call your local pharmacist with ANY questions you have about this medication; go online and Google it; also online you can go to the manufacturer of Prozac, which is the Eli Lilly company.

Yes. Fluoxetine is the generic name for Prozac.
Prozac is an SSRI (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitor). This means that the drug affects a chemical in your brain called seratonin. In many cases it is effective for longterm use against depression.
In my case I noticed that while the drug did make me feel less depressed, it also made me feel less happy as well. It stabilized me so that I no longer had mood swings but no longer got overly happy as well. I also noticed a lot of indigestion associated with the pill, although acidophilus (yogurt or acidophilus pills) helped with this problem.
Prozac has been in use for a while now and for many people it is an effective treatment. If you notice that the condition you are being treated for persists on prozac, talk to your health care professional. Do not just discontinue the drug. They may want to up your dosage or switch drugs but quitting without the recommendation of a doctor may be dangerous to your health.

I was on it for 2 years. I never got any side effects to begin with, but for the last 6 months, I noticed that my mood swings were becoming more pronounced (ie I was getting lower lows and higher highs). After a particularly bad "suicidal low" my doctor changed it to Citalopram which seems to be working quite well. Different people can get different side effects and some might not get any at all. It is quite a good drug to try to ease depression.

Prozac is an antidepressant that seems to work well for most but not all patients receiving it.
If you experience moderate or severe side effects, see your psychiatrist to change the dosage or if the side effects are extreme, change medications.
I have been on Lexapro for 2 weeks now and it has helped my mood and overall mental energy quite nicely with no side effects as of yet.
Unfortunately, a recent study in the American Journal of Psychiatry has shown that after the 1st treatment, patients' rate of dropping out of any treatment increases, while the success rate of further treatments after the 1st one decreases.
So with that in mind, I suggest stay with the Prozac as long as possible and endure the side effects, if any, unless they become debilitating.

don't let doctors push that crap on you. There are many alternative treatments you can find. I've never taken that one, but I know the whole routine. I was on 3 dfft. kinds. The side effects are terrible. Prescription antidepressants are an example of Capitalism run amok. Researchers don't know about the long term effects of this junk.
do an internet search for 5-htp as an alternative treatment.
Hope this helps

Fluoxetine is one antidepressant, the first of the SSRI antidepressants. It must have been taken by about 10,000,000 people worldwide by now.

It took about 2-3 weeks to get use to the side effects, dry mouth and insomia. Then I began to feel much better. If you have any concerns contact your doc.
