Oddball59 said it well.

You probably have other issues in your life that need tending to before reading a relatively boring college textbook.

I had the same problem and have not beaten it yet, so I know what you are feeling.

Make sure 1st that you are meeting all of your biological needs like drinking 8 8oz. glasses of water per day, sleeping 6-9 hours per night or more if you need it, exercising your body daily for at least 15-30 minutes and more if you are in decent shape.

If these are all met daily, then your problem is most likely emotional, i.e. with family or peers or both.

You could even have a mild, low-key form of depression, which will drain your mental energy until you get professional help if that is indeed the case.

In any case, check in with your doctor to see what's wrong when you have time like over the Thanksgiving break and go to a psychiatrist if your problem doesn't seem to have any biological roots.

Medication from the psychiatrist should be your last resort, and I suggest getting a blood and/or urine test from your primary doctor 1st to make sure the problem isn't biological.

Until then, just don't stress yourself too much over this problem and spend more time talking and studying with your peers, since that will boost your concentration at least temporarily and keep you focused on something concrete.

Sounds a lot like you've got other more pressing things on your mind. Stress can cause loss of concentration. It is the brain's way of attending to the most important things first.

Don't beat yourself up about not being able to concentrate.

Limit the amount of time you spend reading then take a break often.

Ask yourself what are the other things in your life that are going on and you need to sort out. Tend to these.

Get a pen and a piece of paper and jot down from the top of your head anything....and I mean anything that comes to mind. Don't think too much about it, just let it flow. You will find that whatever came near the top of your writing is the thing most foremost in your mind.

Hope this helps

Consult with a doctor, it sounds like you need to be evaluated for ADD, attention deficient disorder. Medication really does help with this, my brother had it. Also it could be depression or stress, other common reasons for lack of ability to concentrate. You probably are under alot of pressure right now. See a psychiatrist pronto, nothing to be ashamed of, its a common problem today. and it will make a big difference in how you feel.

YOU PROBABLY HAVE ADD, I HAVE ALWAYS HAD TROUBLE IN THAT AREA, AND I STILL DO, AND I'M 44. I CAN READ GOOD,BUT I DON'T COMPREHEND, I FIND IT BETTER, IF SOMEONE READS TO ME, RATHER THAN ME READ THE BOOK.
