Has anybody here had any problems with the prescription drug hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic for high blood pressure? I don't like it, but my doctor insists that I need to take it. It seems to cause some unpleasant side effects.

Most people tolerate HCTZ without any problems, or else side effects go away after a week, or so.

However, it does cause some problems in some patients (wide range of problems, specific to individuals).

There are PLENTY of other medications for high blood pressure you can take, though. So if you have intolerable side effects with HCTZ, then simply ask (or demand) your doctor to switch you!

Your doctor's insisting you to take this medication is (hopefully) only an encouragement for you to be on medications to control your high blood pressure. And this, so as to avoid strokes, heart attacks, and other problems.

However, your doctor should very readily switch you to another type of blood pressure medication.

Oftentimes, a person has to be on 2-3 different types of medications to control their blood pressure well, anyway.

But, just so you know...HCTZ is the best first choice for a blood pressure medication...in nearly all situations (according to the all the medical societies, etc.). It is inexpensive, well tolerated by the vast majority of people, and very effective.

If increased urination is what you speak about, give it some time...your body will adjust.

If there are other side effects...talk to your doctor, who should switch you to another medication that works for you.

I hope this helps.
