Has anybody here had any problems with the prescription drug Toprol XL, for high blood pressure? I don't like it, but my doctor insists that I need to take it. It seems to cause some unpleasant side effects.

...ahh, you are the same person that asked about the HCTZ!

Well...Toprol XL is known to cause more side effects than other blood pressure medications...fatigue, dizziness, depression, impotence, etc...(not to mention, it is fairly expensive).

But it is still an excellent drug that most people have no side effects with.

In the end, you don't have to take any medications!

But if your blood pressure is high and untreated, you are likely to have a stroke or heart attack. If you are fortunate enough to survive the stroke and/or heart attack, you may not have a fully functioning body, heart, or mind...for the rest of your life.

I would stick with the HCTZ...and also try an ACE-inhibitor (like lisinopril or enalapril). Most people tolerate these without many side effects...(they are both extremely inexpensive, too)...

But if you really hate medications, getting some regular aerobic activity, losing weight, stop smoking (if you do), and eating healthier can help blood pressure some. (and this should be done, anyway, of course).

But hopefully, you can find some way to control your blood pressure...with medications that are tolerable with you...to avoid all the problems that untreated high blood pressure bring...

Weigh the risks with the benefits...discuss with your doctor...and I hope you can come to an agreement together. Some classes of medications for blood pressure are better for certain patients than others, too...

Good luck.
