How long ago were the dust bunnies blown out of the case fans?
I see it often when the customer brings the unit into the shop, and the power supply (PSU) fan has slowed to a crawl, due to aging, the bearings wearing out, nicotine from heavy smokers (we can only change those out, because everything is covered in a dark brown tar that keeps the heat inside the components!).
I have about 80 systems running and change about one to four fans or PSU's each month. More in the summertime! And, We don't smoke!
I run very fast drives (SCSI - small computer system interface) 10,000 rpm Cheetah multiple drives, in a lot of my systems, and they run at about 130 Degrees F each, and so I install an extra case fan in each system.
The Operating System I run on all of them, except for 6 that are Macs, is Linux, just like Microsoft on all their 45,000 corporate systems and servers.
I run http://pclinuxos.com which is free to download. It is totally immune to the "114,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions"! It can be booted up in the CDrom, and run in the CDrom as a test of your entire system!
If you booted from the Live CDrom that you download and burned to CD for free, and the same problem occured with the system shutting down, that would eliminate Windows XP as the culprit. It would indicate a heat problem or a dying fan trouble.
If you ran the PCLinuxOS live CDrom that boots in only the CD, not the hard drive, and it did not still lock up that screen saver, then you would know it IS the Windows XP system, or a virus of some kind on the hard drive!
I certainly hope this helps you to figure out the trouble! All the above is totally free, and are your choice to use or ignore!
