If it's someone I know I let it ring up to 8 times, but no more than that. 6 rings isn't long enough - from past experience they just get to the phone as I stop ringing and have to phone me back, which they then get charged for!
If I'm trying to get through to a business that have sent me a rude letter I let it ring forever, because if they don't answer within 4 rings they're unprofessional and deserve to be annoyed.

I do know someone like that. In fact I'm calling her today and telling her where she can get an answering machine. Let the phone ring four to five times.

If you're calling someone you don't know let it ring 3 times because you don't know if people are just not interested in answering the phone for numbers they don't know. If they answer and it rang 5+ times I'm sure they won't be the nicest people to you.
If it's someone you do know let it ring about 6 or so, if you know them you know they'll want to answer your call if they're home as long as it's not a 5AM call that is.

It depends on how your phone is set, because if it rings on your end 5 times it might just of been three times for the person whos is calling.....so to even it out i would say 4 times......and if they dont have a answering machine just call them what you know they are at home or by thier cell.

If you're calling a person who has a physical handicap and can't get to a phone easily, or someone elderly, 10 rings is considered polite and courteous. If you're calling someone who usually has a phone near them, 3-4 should be enough.

If they are older and slow to get to the phone - I'd say 8 to 10 rings. For a person with no problem walking - 7 to 8 rings.
I'd complain and tell them to get voice mail.

Five or Six rings should be sufficient time to get to the telephone for a young person. However, if we are talking about someone who is elderly I would say 10 times. God bless

i think it depends if they are expecting a call ? if they know i;m gonna call i;ll call till it stops ringing then put the phone down and call again.
now, if it's someone i dont know , 4 is about good. the others ahve done a excelent job at explaining why.
if it;s real urgent , i'm gonna call untill i get through. i;m sure they'l understand
hope this helps !
