Iv heard that Muslims were smart, yet they were not encouraged to make progress in life. Is that true?

There's probably nothing wrong with becoming a successful Muslim, the challenge for many is to find the spiritual balance.

actually alot of science and mathematics arose in the middle east, but the greatest advances in the scientific revolution came as a result of a post reformation Christian world view

so I would say its an overgeneralization. You could make the case for secularism causing science to flounder, ignoring the progress of non embrionic stem cell research for political gamesmanship for example. Secular scientists can be as dogmatic as any religious person... for sure

Yes, it did. Religion generally tends to do that. Just look at how the Christians are holding back science education in schools and trying to stop stem cell research.

It sure seems that way at times. However, the same comment can be made of the Dark Ages and the Catholic Church.
