The person that I live with worked VERY hard to refurbish the floors and I don't want to ruin them, can a dog be de-clawed like a cat? Will a dog's claws even scratch the floor in the first place?

I install Flooring for a living... unfortunately... yes... a dogs claws can scratch a hardwood floor... although... the scratches that you get will be at best surface scratches... the greatest damage I've seen to hardwood floors from animals has been in front of doorways where a dog may scratch at the door to get outside (this also damages the doors)... honestly... the best part of keeping a hardwood floor clear of damage comes from the homeowner themselves... keeping felt on all legs of tables, couches, chairs, etc... don't slide a chair or anything heavy on the floor... I have dogs in my home with hardwood floors and they do a rather minimal amount of damage in comparison to what the shoes you're wearing may do...
Any damage a dog can do (lacking scratching at the floor) will be on the surface and easily repairable...

I have two dogs. I also have hardwood floors in most of my rooms and my dogs haven't done damage to them. I had them installed in April. I have their nails trimmed regularly, if they are too long then they will scratch the floors. The vet says the nails should be trimmed just above floor level, so not too short, but not touching the floor. Also, rugs are a good idea if you are worried. They do make scratch remover/cover up if you do find any scratches.
NO you cannot declaw your dog.

No, that isn't a good idea because he's not going to stay inside all the time and he's not a cat. I don't even think they would de-claw a dog. Just keep his claws trimmed. I also have wood floors and I have 4 dogs. Mine are fine, but remember you have to keep the dog's nails trimmed. You won't have any problems.

yes dogs claws can scratch hardwood floors. i bought laminate flooring apparently dog proof but they have still marked not to much but still scratched. the way i look at it is a house is for living in and not to be a continuous showroom. so what if the flooring has some scratches in it. my dogs are part of my family. getting a dog declawed is so wrong cant believe you asked. if you dont want your floors scratched simple dont buy a dog.

Usually not. I have wood floors in my house and have two siberian huskies and they don't mess up the floor. They run all over the place and they love to slide on the floor. However I do try to keep there nail trimed down. If you get a small dog make sure you keep the nails trimmed because they can have sharper nails than larger dogs. I would probablly recommend getting a medium sized dog and just keep the nails trimmed back fairly regular. You shouldn't have a problem though.

A dog's nails differ greatly from a cat's. No, dogs cannot be declawed. And cats SHOULDN'T be declawed.

I don't think a dog's nails would damage the floors too terribly, but they're bound to do at least a little bit of damage (perhaps just minor scuffs). Why don't you put some nice, big area rugs on your floors? That would help a lot.

it may scratch the floors but the real problem would be the effects on the dog. my friend has 3 dogs and wood flooring throughout the house and all 3 of them have problems with their legs, hips, and feet because there is no support the dogs. so you might also want to think about that.

I have hardword floors throughout my house and the dogs nails did nothing. The only thing I would recommend is getting an already house trained pup. Accidents in the house can cause really bad damage. The nails are no worries as long as you keep them properly trimmed.

yes, they would scratch. i have a dog and her claws have scratched the floor. but if your dog is not running a lot in the house, there will be almost no claw marks. since my dog runs alot in my house and is ubsessed with tennis balls, there are claw marks. but overall, i dont think there will be many claw marks, it any. they are also very hard to see
